Corn woes register around San Joaquin County

There's no drought in California. The stands of grain corn around San Joaquin County, which leads the state in production of the crop, are well above head height. But the Midwest drought and its devastating impact on the nation's corn crop are being felt by Central Valley farmers and businesses. No, it's not yet triggering an influx of destitute immigrants, but it is described as the most severe drought since the Dust Bowl of the mid-1930s.  As a result, corn prices hit record levels last week in the nation's commodity markets. That could be good news or bad news, said Mike Robinson, a former San Joaquin Farm Bureau president. "If you're a corn buyer, you're not happy. If you're a corn seller, you're happy," he said.
