Kern County takes first step on programmatic EIR for dairies
The Kern County Board of Supervisors has approved a consulting agreement to prepare a programmatic EIR for county dairies. Funding for the study will come from a state bond measure backed by Western United Dairymen several years ago as a way to fund costly environmental impact reports required by county planners.
WUD first worked with then-state Senator Jim Costa in placing language in the statewide water quality bond measure that would assure a $5 million allocation for dairy environmental issues. The measure passed in the 2002 election and is now available to counties that are to perform programmatic EIRs.
