WUD and Farm Bureau to co-host tricolored blackbird workshop, Jan. 26

Western United Dairymen will co-host a workshop with Farm Bureau to discuss the tricolored blackbird. This species nests in winter forage fields in the spring during the time of harvest. The meeting will be offered in two locations on Jan. 26, one at the Chowchilla fairgrounds at 10am and again at 2pm at the Tulare UCCE office. If you have additional questions about these meetings please contact your WUD field representative. In December, the California Fish and Game Commission granted endangered species protections to the tricolored blackbird, approving the designation on a temporary, emergency basis. Under the emergency listing, the first ever approved by the panel, the bird will be fully protected for six months, after which the listing may be renewed for another six months. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife is reviewing a petition filed by the Center for Biological Diversity to protect tricoloreds on a permanent basis and impose limits on activities that kill or injure them.
